Sr. Electrical CAD Designer

Lake Superior Consulting is currently growing at a fast pace and as part of that growth, we are seeking to fill a key position as an Electrical Designer at office in Duluth/Minneapolis, MN, Omaha, NE, Nashville, TN or Pittsburgh, PA! Remote positions will also be considered based on experience and strategic location planning.

 


The Electrical Designer is a recognized subject matter expert responsible for creating bidding and construction documents for clients from inception to final Issued for BID and Issued for Construction. Projects will be multi-disciplined covering civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical works with a strong focus in the natural gas, crude, and refined products industry. The Senior CAD Designer works directly with the lead engineer to assign drafters and designers to project work, as well as coordinate work with other disciplines to ensure the deliverables are consistent and depict the correct scope of work. The position requires significant decision-making ability, strong leadership capability, and the ability to work through the technical details and maintain sight of the bigger picture. The Senior CAD Designer assumes a lead role for large projects and is responsive to management and Client needs.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Perform and oversee a wide range of design tasks in accordance with company design standards and procedures.
  • Author and enforce the application of company standards and procedures
  • Expert skillset in creating new and modifying 3D custom components, equipment, structures, facilities, etc. 
  • Able to set up a project in CAD for other engineers and CAD techs to work in
  • Knowledge of specifications and ability to create specs in CAD
  • Consistently meet deadlines while producing accurate documents  
  • Make difficult decisions and appropriate compromises as required
  • Execute special assignments under loose supervision
  • Conceptualize vague and complex systems, and design and communicate project scope successfully in CAD using current industry standards and best practices.
  • Maintain and organize accurate design and drawing archives and revision history
  • Draft Schematics (in AutoCAD), layouts, and other diagrams to support engineers on projects 
  • Have a strong working knowledge of applicable codes, federal transportation regulations, and the development of details and the organization of construction documents
  • Ensure drawing packages have been reviewed and undergone quality checks prior to submission to subject matter experts for final review
  • Have expert knowledge of how multi-discipline drawing packages relate to one another and ensure inter-disciplinary communication is efficient and complete throughout the design process
  • Make periodic field trips to sites to verify information
  • Provide technical and professional guidance and coaching to assigned personnel and/or less experienced colleagues, with the objective of supporting their personal and professional growth
  • Understand the capabilities of team members within their discipline and develop ideas to grow the capabilities of their discipline within the department
  • Find or develop solutions to problems that arise throughout a project. Develop new principles, processes, standards, and procedures where required to complete assignments 
  • Stay up to date on current CAD programs and drawing standards
  • Compute advanced calculations under the direction of an engineer 
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports 
  • Lead project team meetings and provide input based on experience 
  • Quickly adapt to diverse needs and changing projects. Prioritize multiple tasks and competing project deadlines. 
  • Ensure team goals, roles, and expectations are clearly defined. Define discipline-specific project objectives and create task lists for the execution team
  • Identify and resolve project inefficiencies and eliminate non-value added activities
  • Anticipate and foresee projects risks and challenges and provide recommendations to engineering, PM, and management
  • Exhibit dedication to self-development, learning, and expanding role in the business 
  • Identify and lead change in team activities to improve Company performance 
  • Assist project manager and engineers with defining project deliverables and developing cost estimates and project proposals

 

Requirements: 

  • Degree in Electrical CAD drafting or an engineering discipline with drafting and design or relevant background 
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience  
  • Previous discipline-focused experience required (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil/Structural) 
  • Oil and gas industry experience preferred  
  • Expert understanding of 2D and 3D CAD software, preferably AutoDesk products (AutoCAD Electrical)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, and moderate database knowledge. Must be proficient with MS Excel and understand intermediate to advanced formula programming
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be detail-oriented
  • Strong leadership skills to work and lead a team to ensure projects are completed accurately, on time, and within budget 
  • Must have expert knowledge of geo-spatial principles and have a strong understanding of dimensioning, drawing scale, CAD layers, and construction drawing package development
  • Must have strong mathematical background to handle moderate calculations
  • Willing to learn new skills and work as a team to meet deadlines
  • Industrial Process Electrical and Instrumentation and Controls design experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of National Electrical Code. Broad electrical background, including experience in control systems and/or motor control centers.
