Cathodic Protection Field Technician

Lake Superior Consulting is seeking to fill a Field Technician position at our regional office in Duluth, MN. 

The Cathodic Protection Technician role (Field Technician) is a great entry point into a growing industry with high demand! This position does not require prior experience or a specific degree/education (other than a high school diploma). We have employees with a variety of backgrounds currently in these roles (education, physics, criminology, environmental studies), and we are more than willing to train the right candidates!

 

This position requires 75% travel (anywhere in the U.S.). You will typically travel for 3 weeks at a time, return and work 1 week in the office), and then go back into the field for 3 weeks. This is an hourly position that will require the ability to work overtime while traveling. You will travel with a company vehicle, and you will be provided per diem.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the pipeline system is operated in compliance with all company and client policies and procedures and applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations, and coordinates maintenance and operations for the pipeline system within the company. Our CP Technicians work with the cathodic protection systems installing, commissioning, monitoring, evaluating, maintaining and repairing. This role involves a large amount of travel and field work. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work safely by adhering to LSC and client guidelines and procedures
  • Coordinate and lead field crews for cathodic protection-based work scopes as needed
  • Communicate work scopes and responsibilities amongst project specific field-based teams
  • Collaborate with engineers on final deliverables for clients on the collected data
  • Complete and maintain operator qualifications (OQs)
  • Operate and use testing equipment
  • Perform trouble shooting on cathodic protection systems
  • Gather data, prepare records and reports in a timely manner
  • Perform daily safety meetings and submit daily report documentations
  • Install, maintain and repair components of a cathodic protection system
  • Troubleshoot and replace components on a rectifier
  • Generate and gather equipment for kickoffs of projects
  • Ensure your work is utilized with respect to company goals
  • Document and report any incidents, near misses, and opportunities for improvement
  • Work in compliance with all technical procedures and guidelines

 

Position Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • NACE Certified Cathodic Protection Technician (CP1) a plus but not necessary
  • Ability to perform basic CP test methods (CIS, DCVG, soil resistivity, etc.) after training
  • Experience with land survey, navigation, interpretation of engineering designs, mechanical repair, IT, and/or construction is a plus
  • Ability to travel extensively for physically demanding work in an outdoor environment
  • Capability to operate a company vehicle, ATV, and use general hand/power tools
  • Must have strong critical thinking, problem solving, and troubleshooting abilities
  • Commitment to working safely and producing high quality, ethical service
  • Highly motivated and thrives in a dynamic, team-based environment
  • Desire to collaborate with project managers, engineers, and management; locally and through other office locations
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Desire to learn and understand basic cathodic protection
  • Interpersonal skills to foster teamwork and build positive working relationships
  • Well organized and ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
  • Willingness to learn applicable State and Federal regulatory requirements (CFR 49 Part 192 & 195)
  • Willingness to learn NACE standards and test methods

 

Physical Requirements and Demands:

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment, as required
  • Ability to traverse rugged terrain, excavations and work around pipe and equipment, as required
  • Must be able to travel to offsite locations for extended periods of time
  • Frequent periods of standing for long periods
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lb.
  • Exposure to weather including heat and cold climates
  • Ability to work long hours for extended periods, when projects demand
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work with a computer for extended periods
